On Our Way to Arrowtown - Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011

We are headed South from Wanaka to Arrowtown.

.
Blue Sky and Major Hills to Drive

First Stop Cardrona Hotel
Time for Sunday Morning Coffee

The lawn behind the hotel was lovely.

And the company was great!

The birds here even drink great coffee and enjoy the slices.
What are slices?
New Zealand  Bars

Back on the road!

This next stretch is just crazy!
Our little 4 cylinder Toyota (LSC) nearly had to be
pushed up the hills by Lynnette!

For those that watched the Lord of the Rings...
Think Middle Earth.  Then you will know where we are....

Isn't this simply grand??

OK --- I need to get out of the LSC.... the view is great!
I needed air... next stop is going down the hills that we had
been going up..... OH GOOD GRIEF.... here as the switch backs
I hope we have good breaks... EX-Trooper driving!

Switch backs --- the gray pieces of road on this hill side!

Arrival -- Arrowtown!
Arrowtown is a 20 minute drive from Queenstown to the south.
The early 1860's was the gold rush.
You are about the to journey the Chinese gold rush settlement.

The Chinese miners played a big part of in Arrowtown's history
after 1865, when they were invited to fill the vacuum created by European miners
who had left for the West Coast gold rush.

Chinese Out House!

Local Chinese Store
where chinese miners were able to get basic supplies.

Example of Chinese Miner Houses.

The Chinese miners lived here while their families were in China.
The winters were very cold... they lived in isolation sending money back
to support their families.

Off to look at the art and shops of the Arrowtown!

Metal goat art.... Lee, I would like one of these.

Not sure what this plant is... but it is seen across central Otago.
Simply beautiful.... I need to have these for my garden!

Off to the local cemetery.
By the names... it appeared to be Irish.

Head into Arrowtown... time for coffee.

Arrowtown feels like stepping back 100 years...but the shops
provide wonderful NZ wool clothing. You can drop
serious dollars shopping here!

OK Jay... time to hit the road and head back to Wanaka...
We are headed back through Central Otago... the stone fruit
and vineyard world.

We are now headed to Cromwell -- Central Otago.
Once again...think Lord of the Rings

It just is totally beautiful....

Travel through Central Otago

After 10 days of walking, it is time to rent a car

and try driving on the left side of the road.

We are headed to Wanaka... through central Otago
to the resort area for summer hiking and boating while
winter is alpine skiing and snow boarding.

Along the way... this is a common site.
Fields of sheep, cows, and some deer.

A view of small houses along the road.

Our 4 hour journey took us through simply beautiful hills.

We are now headed north on Hiway 8 headed to Alexandra.
We are entering the area of fantastic orchards and vineyards.

Time for a picnic?

How about a sandwich and some fresh fruit?

Back on the road again... the final miles to Wanaka.

Past vineyards we travel....

Lake Dunstan
The beautiful river running from Cromwell north to Wanaka.
The original Cromwell village was lost when the Clyde Dam
flooded the city and created Lake Dunstan.

Destination - Wanaka

Road worn...

The weekend begins ...

Time for some crackers, cheese, and a diet coke!
